Nicholas has progressed in several areas in the last couple of weeks. He is eating everything in sight. Yesterday, Meagan called to ask what to do because he had already eaten 2 hot dogs, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, 4 cookies and was asking for more. I guess that it's a "brain thing".
Although he didn't pass the liquid part of the swallow test, he did very well with the solids. He has been swallowing liquids much better and hardly coughs at all. He has been asking about his tooth because hot and cold foods hurt. They will be fixing it as soon as he passes the swallow test in all areas.
On February 16th we will be taking Nick to a specialist for his eyes. He is still seeing double and with blurred vision. Please pray that this can be improved without any major adjustments.
For the last month Nick has been going to the bathroom. (No more diapers) This is a huge step. It is more difficult for us because we walk him to the bathroom, but we are so excited that his life is getting more normal every day.
Nick has been remembering small bits of his past. When asked about some of the more important events, he says that he doesn't remember, but he asks us about little things that make us believe that a few pieces of the puzzle are coming into focus. It is our hope that those pieces will come together into "The big picture" of his past. Some of the things he remembers are amazing.
I have been showing Nick pictures in hopes that it will spark memories. He looked at pictures of his senior trip and of graduation, but he doesn't remember either, yet when I showed him a picture of himself running, he spelled out GUEYDAN. He was right. It was taken at the Gueydan meet when he was in the 8th grade. I have also been showing him videos of his track meets.
If any of you have any videos or pictures that you think may help, please let me know.
Nick has been much more positive about his progress and says he WILL walk soon. Yesterday his therapist let him walk with a cane and although he needed assistance, this is a far cry from where he was two months ago.
This morning he called me at 5:30 and when I got to his room, he was sitting up on the side of his bed waiting for me to take him to the bathroom. This was a first!!!!!!!!
I regret that it takes me so long to post, but we have been extremely busy at work and when I get home, my time is Nick's.
Please come and visit anytime.
Sondra
