Update for week ending 9/11/06

Nick has been doing better every day with his walking. Today he walked all of the way from his bed to our staircase by the back door. We have only two more days before he gets his wheelchairs and we are impatiently waiting. We have been using a fold up chair to shower him and it is very difficult.

I gave Nick some pudding last week and he loved it. He is swallowing really well and I plan to try to puree regular food for him after he has passed his swallow test, which is next Monday.

Yesterday, he was very confused. Although he knew who were were, he wrote "Go Home" (in his scratchy writing) on a tablet. When I told him he was home, he said no. So, I brought him outside to look at the house and he realized that he really was home. It seems that his emotions are up and down right now. Sometimes he looks very depressed and if he is understanding his situation, it is only natural that he would be impatient about his progress. We know how far he's come because we were there every step of the way, but he was in a coma for so long that he doesn't realize what progress he has made.

He always reacts to Emily and wants to rub her belly. He reacts when "Baby Kate" kicks his hand.

Nick is still not talking, but he mouths words to us. Sometimes we can understand by reading his lips. He told Emily "Happy Birthday" yesterday and he says "Good Morning" to me most days.

Nick has gained some weight since he is home. I'm not sure how much because we haven't weighted him, but it is getting more difficult for me to move him when he is too tired to help.

His progress seems to have slowed down, but he hasn't regressed, so that is all we can ask.

Thanks to Cindy Leblanc for the delicious soups you sent last week.
I thoroughly enjoyed them!!
